When speaking about graphic designs, one of the many aspects of a design is the presence of typographies. Typography was particularly useful for designing title cards, logos, or wall decorations; typographies utilized a set of decorative texts written using stylized glyphs. A category of similarly designed glyphs is called a ‘typeface,’ consisting of several subcategories called ‘fonts.’
This article lists some of the most popular fonts that define our typeface trend 2021.
Serif Fonts
The term ‘serif’ actually refers to a small line or stroke attached to parts of a larger stroke in a glyph or symbol. Often referred to as a more classical and elegant group of typefaces, serif fonts generate a feeling of professionalism and elegance. This particular typeface is getting more sophisticated and refined in modern graphic designs. Two of our most popular serif fonts will be discussed further.
Smithsonian – Handcrafted Rebel Font
This particular serif font is unlike most of its brethren who breathe elegance to the design. Instead, it breathes burning passion and resilience into your design. The serifs are subtle but enough to accentuate each individual glyph. It comes in all caps as the default with some variations. You can choose to use the base Smithsonian fonts or Smithsonian Shadow, a layered variation that gives a three-dimensional feel to the design.
This font is perfect for designing posters, quotes, logos, leaflets, or jargon.
Pizzaria – Western Serif Font
This slab-style serifed font features thick, uniformed brushstrokes and slightly tipped corners in some letters, making it appear fun and playful instead of the usual serious and professional. The serifs themselves are quite defined, making the texts appear bigger and could easily catch the attention of viewers. The fonts come not only with a complete set of glyphs but also assorted cartoon-style fast food icons.
This font is popular for designing restaurant menus, decorations, posters, flyers, or just for a fun design project.
Sans-serif Fonts
The name ‘sans-serif’ indicates that the fonts belonging to this typeface lack the features that define a serif font. Sometimes also referred to as grotesque, sans-serif fonts appear simpler and more relaxed than serifs. They are often utilized to give a sense of simplicity, modernity, or minimalism. Two of our most popular sans-serif fonts have contributed to the typeface trend 2021.
Spotnik – Modern Futuristic Font
Thin line, open connections here and there, and the overall geometric shape of this font appear modern and futuristic. The futuristic feels are further amplified by the fact that this font has no sharp edges—all the corners are rounded to give the simple design a more refined look. Honestly, this font would look like it was laser-etched onto your design.
This font is popular for designing all kinds of media that speak about technology, space, science, and digital-related design projects.
Trampoline – Instagram Sans Serif Font
As the name suggests, this font brings a sense of joy and glee to your design. With thin lines and quirky curves, this font can easily catch the attention of viewers. By default, it is an all-caps font with slight variation between uppercase and lowercase. All of the mentioned characteristics would make your design look fresh, quirky, and modern.
This font is well-suited for designs oriented on digital content, like social media posts, quotes, and branding campaigns.
What to Expect from 2022
The current design trends are still playing around simplicity and modernity, so we expect that design trend 2022 will be a refined version of said modernity. As society prepares itself for the upcoming Metaverse, we can assume that graphic design as a whole would walk towards that direction as well. And with the rise of NFT as a new form of digital collectibles, we can also expect more unique designs to fill this new niche.
In terms of typefaces and typography in general, one design studio predicted that the typography trend 2022 would see the return of Arts-and-Crafts style typography. They also predicted super-thick slab fonts to gain considerable popularity, along with handwriting-style and retro curves, among others.
All in all, with millions of fonts available today, designers will not run out of ideas to express themselves anytime soon. Whether these predictions will be proven or not, we’ll just have to wait and see.
