We have seen the rising popularity of geometric shapes in graphic design for a couple of years. Over the years, abstract geometry has become one of the staples in modern graphic design. In 2021, this revival of an old trend reached new heights. Three-dimensional geometric shapes can be found on event posters, website backgrounds, logo designs, and trendy packaging.
We will review the aspects of geometric shapes that influenced design trend 2021.
Geometry and Art
Geometry is actually one of the oldest branches of mathematics. In its essence, geometry visualizes the properties of space using points, lines, planes, distances, angles, surfaces, and curves. To simplify, the visualization gave birth to what we call ‘geometrical shapes’—triangles, rectangles, ovals, squares, etc.
These geometric shapes were utilized in various art forms throughout history. From various rock arts of our prehistoric ancestors to today’s graphic design trends, geometric shapes have always been a part of our society. These shapes will always have a place in humanity’s visual art preference, as we associate them with various representations.
Geometric Shapes and What They Represent
We have mentioned earlier that humans use geometric shapes to represent many things for ages. For many years now, we have understood that each shape triggers some expressions in our minds. Understanding what kind of expression is triggered by which shape is fundamental in graphic design, as we want to convey something to the viewers. Perhaps, what makes geometric trends 2021 thrived is because it can convey those messages without being too obvious.
Squares and Rectangles
The most common shapes in design projects, squares and rectangles, are also the most recognizable shapes. We encounter these four-sided shapes on a daily basis, from street signs to the very screen you use to read this article.
All squares and rectangles are formed by four straight lines connected to each other with four right angles. While the sides of squares are of equal length, rectangles have two longer sides parallel to each other, making it appear as an elongated square. Both shapes give viewers a sense of security and reliability, as well as rigidity and safety. Other association with square and rectangle shapes includes strength and discipline.
Triangles
Three edges, three straight lines, and defined as an energetic and dynamic shape, triangles are also quite easy to recognize. Compared to squares and rectangles, triangles have several types according to their internal angles and/or the length of their vertices.
Triangles can represent different feelings depending on their own position. A triangle is upright, and pointing up represents balance and stability. However, pointing down triggers a feeling of risk and instability. When pointed sideways, especially with several triangles pointed in the same direction, it represents movement.
Circles, Ovals, and Ellipses
Circular shapes—circles, ovals, and ellipses—are different from other geometric shapes because they don’t have angles. All three are different types of closed curves—a circle is, well, a circle, an oval looks like an egg with a narrower parabola on one side, while an ellipse has two narrow parabolas on opposite sides.
Those circular shapes are quite popular for designers due to their versatility and very noticeable shape. Since they have no beginning or end, they represent infinity, eternity, or continuity. Many cultures also used circles to represent the sun, the moon, or even life itself.
Organic Shapes
As the name suggests, organic shapes or natural shapes are polygons that picture organic matters like leaves, animals, or flowers in a two-dimensional plane. Unlike other geometric shapes, organic shapes are not formed by a definitive set of lines, curves, and angles as long as they represent their real-world counterpart.
The use of organic shapes in graphic design can make viewers feel more connected to the natural environment. Because they represent a real-life object, organic shapes tend to possess the same representation as to the real object. For example, leaves or trees represent nature, and roses represent love and passion, so on and so forth.
Would It Thrive In 2022?
Seeing that the current trend is starting to pick up 2D/3D fusion, the geometric shape trend 2021 will continue next year. Some designers also tried to revive and modernize art deco in their projects, so geometric shapes would still be relevant for a couple more years. As to what form it would take, we just have to wait and see.
